Career Ruts – What to do when you feel stuck

Home » Resources: Career Motivation » Career Ruts – What to do when you feel stuck

Feeling stuck in your career happens more often than you might think. Rather than ignore it, this could be the signal you need to reassess and reframe your professional path.

Which career path to choose?

Why do career ruts happen?

  • You may be misaligned with your strengths or values.
  • You feel trapped in a job lacking growth or challenges.
  • You haven’t clarified your long-term goals, or they’ve shifted.

How do you break out of a career rut?

  1. Take stock of your strengths and weaknesses. What are you good at? What drains you? Use this insight to guide your next move.
  2. Set personal, achievable goals. These could be skills to develop, tasks to master, or even projects to lead.
  3. Build your network. Talk to people in other roles, industries, or levels. Their paths may inspire your own next step.
  4. Seek feedback. Ask for honest input from trusted colleagues or a mentor to help you gain clarity.
  5. Embrace new challenges. Volunteer for a project, take on a stretch assignment, or learn a new skill.
  6. Reflect and realign. Carve out quiet time to reflect on what you truly want — not just what you’re good at.
  7. Manage your mindset. Adopt a growth-oriented attitude: change takes time, but small steps compound.

Career Rut Checklist:

  •  Have I committed to one new learning activity or challenge?
  •  Have I identified specific areas where I feel stuck?
  •  Do I have at least two personal goals to move forward?
  •  Have I reached out to someone in my network for insight?
  •  Am I actively seeking feedback on my work or career direction?
