What Recruiters Look For

Home » Resources: Interview » What Recruiters Look For

Recruiters don’t just look at your CV. They evaluate how you carry yourself, how you think, and how well you’ll fit into the team. Here are five key characteristics that matter in every industry.

1. Confidence without Arrogance

Recruiters asses if your confidence is humble, without arrogance, from the moment you step into the room.

  • Show assurance without overselling yourself.
  • Speak clearly and make eye contact.
  • Listen actively.

2. Culture Fit

Recruiters prioritize candidates who fit well with the existing culture and align with the company’s mission.

  • Use specific examples from past roles or experiences.
  • Do your research and understand the company’s mission.
  • Be ready to share how your values and approach match theirs.

3. Real World Knowledge

Recruiters want to know about your practical knowledge.

  • Show that you understand the realities of the work.
  • Share practical experience from jobs, internships, or volunteer work.
  • Talk about what you’ve learned and how you’ve applied it.

4. Manners and Professionalism

Professional etiquette speaks volumes.

  • Avoid interrupting, chewing gum, or using your phone.
  • Greet everyone respectfully — not just the interviewer.
  • Be on time.

5. A Positive Attitude

Recruiters are looking for enthusiastic candidates with a passion for their responsibilities.

  • Show enthusiasm for the role.
  • Be open to learning and collaboration.
  • Demonstrate resilience, especially when discussing past challenges.

When all else is equal, your attitude can be the deciding factor. A positive, respectful, and proactive mindset goes a long way.
