Be Honest – But Measured

  • If you were let go, explain briefly and take responsibility.
  • Avoid being defensive — frame the experience as a learning opportunity.

Stay Positive

  • Don’t speak negatively about past employers.
  • Focus on what you learned and what you’re looking for in your next role.

Keep it Brief

  • Share your reason clearly, then move on.
  • Don’t offer extra details unless asked.

Re-Focus on the Role you are Applying for

  • End your answer by talking about why you’re excited about this new opportunity.
  • Show how this role better matches your goals or strengths.

Here are some examples of professional responses:

  • “I enjoyed my time there, but I’m looking for a role that offers more opportunities to grow.”
  • “The company restructured, and my position was impacted. I’m now looking for a role that allows me to contribute in a more strategic capacity.”

Tip: Every question in an interview is a chance to show your mindset, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Keep your answers focused and intentional.
